This is a transcription of Giovanni Battista Martini’s (1706-1784) In monte Oliveti originally written for TTB voices a cappella. This has been used as music for Tenebrae. Original Latin text and translation are below:
In monte Oliveti ad patrem oravit:
Pater si fieri potest transeat a me calix iste.
“Vigilate et orate,
ut non intretis in tentationem.
“Spiritus quidem promptus est,
caro autem infirma.
Fiat voluntas tua.”
On the Mount of Olives he prayed to his Father:
Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me.
“Watch and pray,
lest you enter into temptation.
The spirit indeed is willing,
but the flesh is weak.
Let your will be done.“
