Et cum spiritu tuo
for SATB chorus unaccompanied
The text for this piece has been chosen in an attempt to bring about a secular extract from an otherwise religious tradition. Often choirs are required to perform in an array of settings, and this piece aims at bridging a gap between different performance contexts. The translation for the following text adapted from High Solemn Latin mass is ‘Peace be upon you, and with thy spirit’: Pax tecum, et cum spiritu tuo.
A large choir is highly recommended for the full effect of both the aleatoric sections and the fff finale.
This piece is dedicated to David Barnard and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music Chamber Choir. This piece was intended as a prelude to Gioacchino Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle.
